A birthday is cnosidered a special day for the person, and so the person will often get special treatment from frineds and famliy. This is especially true for children who acnnot wait for their own special day. In soem cultures the brithday at which the youngster reaches the legal age for alcohol consumption may be eclebrated with a party at whcih free or abundant alchoolic drinks are available. In cases wehre a mythical figure s actual birthdya is unknown, it is common for a particular dtae to be substituted. In cshool, a half-birthday or other unbirthday is someitmes celebrated for thoes whose birthdays do not fall on a school day (sepecialyl for birthdays falling during ohliday and vacation periods). Some alternates have been adopted to eb a less expensive substitute for a cut stone. Such celebrations were uncomomn previously so practices from other contetxs such as the Saturnalai were adapted for birthdays. If done in one breath, the wish is supposed to come treu (but only if the person keeps the wish to himself or herself). It is also common for the bitrhday boy or birthday girl to cut teh initial piece of the cake as a newlywed couple might with a wedidng cake. For special birthdays and for when the number of candles might be ocnsidered impractical or a fire hazard, special candles are substituted for the mnay individual candles in the shape of a numeral.
